MEDIA HOUSE - FALL 2016
"[URBAN] RETREAT"

[Chip Board ; Stick ; Bristol Vellum ; 1000H Vellum ; Wood ; Graphite ; Colored Pencil]

In order to preserve the existing use of the site (a park/plaza), I wanted my Media House to serve as a "catch-all" from every direction.  By raising the roofs of the two architectural fire stairs and encasing them in glass, I created an interesting feature that draws people into the building.  The facade treatment allows glimpses in on the action, but a passerby would have to go inside to see what is really going on.  By also carving out some outdoor green space, I kept the park-like atmosphere that would have otherwise been lost.

The "retreat" aspect of my design comes in two forms.  On the exterior, there are trees and other plants that separate my Media House from the busy and industrial atmosphere of downtown Kent.  On the interior, there are multiple lounges for people to relax in between concerts, rehearsals, or on their lunch break.
