MARKET HALL + ACADEMIC INCUBATOR - SPRING 2017
"THE CATERPILLAR"
[X Board ; Wood ; Stick ; Moss ; Knitting Mesh ; Chip Board]
Located near University Circle, our site was originally used for parking. By transforming the lot into a lush, active, and inviting space, the surrounding area gains an important asset for health and wellness.
For "The Caterpillar," I was inspired by just that. Since a caterpillar actively seeks out food, I likened this to the neighborhood's search for somewhere fresh and green. Serving as a market, academic building, and a park, The Caterpillar's everyday use is decided by the community. Specifically for the community, I designed the central staircase to be wrapped with an herb garden - free to anyone who wants to use it. In addition, the exterior lattice (represented with the knitting mesh) can be planted with climbing plants such as flowers or even some fruits and vegetables.
The green roof helps in collecting rainwater to use for irrigation, plumbing, and reduces the "heat island" effect. The south facing window wall is covered with "Solar Glass" that collects solar energy to assist in powering the building. Finally, the grassy exterior space allows people to experience nature in the heart of the city, promoting a respectful relationship.
